A Polite and Commercial People: England 1727-1783 (New Oxford History of England)By Paul Langford

The first volume of Sir George Clark's Oxford History of England was published in 1934, and over 50 years that series established itself as a standard reference for hundreds of thousands of readers. The New Oxford History of England, of which this is the first volume, is its successor. In this, the most authoritative, comprehensive general history of England between the accession of George II and the loss of America, Paul Langford merges conflicting images of the 18th century into a coherent picture to reveal the true character of the age. Conventional views of the 18th century emphasize its political stability, aristocratic government, stately manners, and Georgian elegance. But Langford reveals another aspect of the times--a less orderly world of treasonous plots, rioting mobs, and Hogarthian vulgarity. Using the latest research and a wealth of techniques culled from a variety of disciplines, he tells an absorbing tale of remarkable contrasts and changes. An age often seen in static terms is brought to life with all its contradictions and tensions revealed.

Review "The publication of the first volume of the New Oxford History of England series, under the general editorship of J.M. Roberts, is something of an awesome event."--London Review of Books

"The New Oxford History of England is off to a grand start. There could be no better example of the best in historical scholarship; Langford's is impeccable. His selection of material, the arrangement of the subject matter, and the seamless prose make this a must for English scholars and a jewel in the library of the general reader."--History: Reviews of New Books

"[The New Oxford History of England's] first volume is a carefully crafted product...and it engagingly evokes the period."--Albion

From the Back Cover It is the story of a transformation, or rather a series of transformations. Politeness and commerce were already hackneyed terms in the 1730s, and Blackstone's expression would still have seemed appropriate in the 1780s.

About the Author Paul Langford is Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford.

So at Castle Rock, we are in the process of creating a vision statement, or perhaps creating some stronger branding within the community. Of course, there are hundreds of books from the religious community on this topic, but instead of reading the same stuff repackaged, I always look to read for other sources to create more creativity within myself. A leader needs a wide variety of material to think outside of the box, and when you think about Starbucks, whatever you think of the coffee, but you cannot say that the company has not branded itself well. It is highly known in this culture. So wanted to read about this man that accomplished a lot. Howard Schultz grew up poor, and has done a great job leading the company. Even when he stepped away, the company started to fail, but he came back, and the company took off again. The book is really fun to read, and is insightful on the journey of growing the company. It is a great story, but there is also a lot of practical advice. You have to root your organization in values and principles because if you have to think through every choice, you are killing valuable time. I liked the chapters on growing large, and feeling small. I liked the people focused dynamics. A lot of the topics translate into the church world well. If you are looking for a light read, this is a good book, and will make you think about your church culture too.

I loved reading this book. The author wrote it with what I consider a simple yet effective storytelling rythm that captivates and inspires the reader. Mr. Schultz talks about his childhood as a poor kid from Brooklyn, and how the example of this dad, who couldn't find inspiration in his life, threw him to be entrepreneurial and never to give up.The author writes all the way from the begining, how he knew Starbucks while working at a big company, and how he left his comfortable lifestyle and salary to pursue his dream: a project he could call his own. Some of the messages this books gives are clear and direct. Some of the ones I remember are:- People connect with Starbucks because of what it stands for, not what it is.- With pride in their work, Starbucks employees are less likely to leave.- Starbucks's stores are oasis in the middle of urban chaos where one can have some minutes of relaxation with a cup of coffee.- What people call niche markets may appeal to more people that you can imagine.- Make a point to underpromise and overdeliver.- Word of mouth is more powerful than advertising.- When companies fail, is mostly because they don't invest in people.- Entrepreneurial ventures are ruined by short-term thinking.- Once you figure out what you want to do, find someone who has done it before. Many more quotes can be written, because the books pages are filled with lessons for everyone thinking about starting their own business, or improving their existing one.

For years I was not a big coffee drinker. Somehow I survived college without giving into the caffeinated demon of the dark roast. However, a year after graduate school, I found myself working for a university that had me help manage the on campus coffee shop. Quickly I learned the science and art that is espresso making. Over time I was transformed from a delicate Frappuccino drinker to a serious espresso connoisseur (also known as a coffee snob).Soon I began to critique the subtle nuance of every coffee shop I visited. Most were very consistent with being inconsistent. Depending on the barista, your latte could be delicious or terribly bitter. Only one place could give me a reliable tasty latte with great service. This is how I became very impressed with Starbucks.Eventually I learned a lot more about Starbucks as a company. I heard about its lightning fast rise to the top, the way it hires and trains its baristas, and its community involvement. The man who transformed Starbucks from a coffee wholesaler in Seattle to the name brand mega-company was none other than Howard Schultz, Starbucks Chairman and CEO.Pour Your Heart into It chronicles the history of Starbucks and how it grew into a national brand synonymous with great coffee. From the Schultz's account, you see that the success of Starbucks occurred not by well-developed strategic business planning or incredibly good luck. Starbucks rose to the top because everyone at Starbucks - from the part-time barista to the CEO - believed in the company. Each employee is passionate about working for Starbucks and Starbucks was passionate about each employee. This book is a very interesting and personal account about the rise of Starbucks. I definitely recommend this to anyone interested in running an organization with passion and authenticity.

Review

Deeply reported and researched… Midnight in Broad Daylight” not only tells one family’s remarkable story but also makes an important contribution to our knowledge of the Japanese-American experience in World War II, on both sides of the ocean and the hyphen. (New York Times Book Review)[S]ublime prose and prodigious research…“Midnight in Broad Daylight” is as riveting and moving a book as has ever been written about World War II, made all the more compelling by the blending of American and Japanese perspectives. (Seattle Times)“An intimately detailed look at the agony of a Japanese American family struggling to maintain American loyalty amid discrimination and war. . . . A richly textured narrative history. . . . A beautifully rendered work wrought with enormous care and sense of compassionate dignity.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“[O]ne of the most wrenching, inspirational-and until now unknown-true epics of World War II….luminous, magisterial…[Sakamoto] has helped shape and set the standard for a vital and necessary new genre: transpacific literature. Her readers will want more.” (Ron Powers, Pulitizer Prize winner and author of Mark Twain: A Life)“Riveting in its alternating American and Japanese perspectives, and a fresh look at the dropping of the atom bomb over Hiroshima, this story is inspirational as well as educational. A great addition to World War II literature.” (Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, coauthor of Farewell to Manzanar)“This deeply researched and elegantly written history is a rare human drama that spans the Japanese-American experience as few, if any, books have done…. a cultural document that immerses the reader…” (USA Today)“Midnight in Broad Daylight is a deeply moving, well-written work that ranks among the better accounts of the injuries inflicted in wartime on civilian and ethnic populations. Students of war crimes and crimes against humanity are sure to notice this book.” (Herbert Bix, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Hirohito and the Making of Modern Japan)

From the Back Cover

After their father’s death, Harry, Frank, and Pierce Fukuhara—all born and raised in the Pacific Northwest—moved to Hiroshima, their mother’s ancestral home. Eager to go back to America, Harry returned in the late 1930s. Then came Pearl Harbor. Harry was sent to an internment camp until a call came for Japanese translators, and he dutifully volunteered to serve his country. Back in Hiroshima, his brothers, Frank and Pierce, became soldiers in the Japanese Imperial Army.As the war raged on, Harry, one of the finest bilingual interpreters in the United States Army, island-hopped across the Pacific, moving ever closer to the enemy—and to his younger brothers. But before the Fukuharas would have to face one another in battle, the United States detonated the atomic bomb over Hiroshima, gravely injuring tens of thousands of civilians, including members of their family.Alternating between the American and Japanese perspectives, Midnight in Broad Daylight captures the uncertainty and intensity of those charged with the fighting, as well as the deteriorating home front of Hiroshima—as never told before in English—and provides a fresh look at the dropping of the first atomic bomb. Intimate and evocative, it is an indelible portrait of a resilient family, a scathing examination of racism and xenophobia, and an homage to the tremendous Japanese American contribution to the American war effort.

This is a brilliant combination of history and biography written in stylish prose that captures the reader from the start. Many of the editorial reviews have stated already stated that this is "riveting in its alternating American and Japanese perspectives, and a fresh look at the dropping of the atom bomb over Hiroshima, this story is inspirational as well as educational." This is truly an epic tale. You are taken on a family journey; portrayed with style and grace. I was captured and entranced from the outset. Ms. Sakamoto should be highly praised for discovering this heartbreaking, heartrending story, and praised for the detailed research that went into the preparing this complex story. I loved taking the journey, enjoyed the format, and the entwining of history and biography. I agree with others that it is "a richly textured narrative history. . . . A beautifully rendered work wrought with enormous care and sense of compassionate dignity." You will discover that you have much to learn about the Japanese-American experience during WWII. As with all good history and biography, there are many lessons applicable to modern day discourse. This book has challenged many of my present day views. Good! That's a sign of a superb historian! As one reviewer has noted, this is an intimate and evocative portrait of a family, "an indelible portrait of a resilient family, a scathing examination of racism and xenophobia, an homage to the tremendous Japanese American contribution to the American war effort, and an invaluable addition to the historical record of this extraordinary time." I agree wholeheartedly. You will not be disappointed. I hope the book receives the awards it justly deserves. Timely and beautifully written. This should be a top ten book on any reviewers list.

Engrossing book. Non-fiction that reads like a good novel. Sakamoto captures the sense of loss and righteous confusion felt by the Fukuharas over their situation. The reader can empathize with all members of the family and feel their pain and yet be in awe of their firmly-held belief that things will be OK and that they can endure their suffering in the present because there is light at the end of the tunnel. One of the best books (fiction or non-fiction) I have read in a long time!

Harry Fukuhara was born in Seattle, Washington in 1921 and through unlikely twists of fate ended up a priceless interpreter/translator for the MIS (Military Intelligence Service) during WWII. The saga of his family is told with meticulous research and detail by Pamela Rotner Sakamoto.Against his will, Harry was taken by his mother to Japan with his siblings after his father died. After securing a promise that he could return if he graduated from high school there, he applied himself and finally did return, but to an America that was not welcoming to him in 1938. The sojourn in Japan, however, had secured him a solid education in that arcane language and a deep understanding of the vocabulary of war because his high school had been militarized. This was to prove invaluable when he volunteered for the Army. Each member of his family went through his/her own struggle to survive, some of them living through the horrors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Aside from Harry's own incredible story, I was surprised to learn so much about the life and times of Nisei (second gen Japanese-Americans) in Japan as well as on the West Coast. Even those who are familiar with the incarceration of Japanese-Americans in the camps following America's declaration of war may find much of this story new to them. I didn't realize that for Nisei who happened to be in Japan pre-war, life was difficult as they were looked upon with hostility which got even worse once war started. The same applied on the West Coast where they were subject to discrimination before the war, too.At times, I found that Sakamoto's efforts at accuracy seemed to make the flow of the story a bit rough, such as the extensive use of direct quotations to express the feelings and actions of people. Nevertheless, this is one heck of a story and worth reading more than once. I recommend it! After reading my Kindle copy, I decided to buy the hard copy and was surprised to find that it contains many photographs none of which is on the Kindle version.

I have read with interest many books about WW2 and my interest increased when my husband started working a job that took us to Japan for 6 months out of the year for the last 8 years. Imagine my delight to discover a book that tells the story of the Pacific Theater from the perspective of both sides of the war from one family that were divided and fighting on two different sides. I am an avid reader, but I was completely taken back when I discovered that this book was hands down one of the best books I have ever read. It was well written and told the story of this amazing family beautifully. I was moved and inspired. I have never read a book that I just had to get on Facebook and recommend it to everyone. A beautifully well written masterpiece!!!
